Introduction to Transportation Terminology

AIR CARGO & SEA CARGO

AIR CARGO

Air freight is typically handled through contracts with airlines for cargo space.

  • Known for its speed, but also more expensive.

  • Limited by aircraft space, usually charged by weight (kg).

  • Some goods have length restrictions for air freight; please inquire before shipping.

Volume weight

Commonly used in air freight. Some goods are large in volume but light in weight, so volumetric weight is used for billing, usually at a ratio of 1:167.

SEA CARGO

Ocean freight typically involves transporting goods by leasing shipping containers from a shipowner, generally charged by cubic meter.

CBM

Cubic meters – the unit of measurement for ocean freight, calculated as:

Length × Width × Height of the cargo.

LCL (Less than Container Load)

Groupage shipment: combining goods from multiple customers into one container.

Cost-effective for small or individual customers.

FCL (Full Container Load)

Full container loading for exclusive use.
